The Nikon 60mm f2.8G Ed AF-S Micro-NiKkor is a quality lens which will make a good edition to any lens collection. I own the the older 105mm f2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor and the 70-180mm f4.5-5.6D Micro-Nikkor and I'm well please with this new lens. I would recommend this lens to anyone interested in closeup photography.

I've owned virtually all of Nikon's short macro lenses, going back to the 1970's, and I have to say, this is the best of them all - and that's saying something.
Not only does it have fast and accurate autofocus (although the previous AF version wasn't bad either), it just gives you jaw-dropping detail, whether you use it close up or focused at infinity.
The 60mm is a little short for serious closeup work as it puts you right on top of the subject...this is why some people prefer the 105, and I might agree if I shot FX-sensor cameras exclusively. But on a DX sensor, this acts more like a 90mm lens, and that's plenty comfortable for the type of work I do. Indeed, I find when I go REALLY close, I tend to use an old-fashioned bellows setup, and again, here I like the 60 instead of the 105.
One point about this particular lens is that it's not just incredibly sharp and contrasty - it also has a wonderfully flat field of focus. On the older lenses, if you photograph, say, stamps or other flat objects, you may have had issues with the corners being slightly out of focus due to curvature of field. Not so with this one, which is flat right out to the corners.
It also makes a great normal lens for day-to-day use, for those of us who like to travel light and leave the monster zooms home.
Highly recommended.

Nikon has done an outstanding job with the relatively new 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Micro-Nikkor lens. Taking over for the earlier Normal Micro 60mm it has done an outstanding job of holding its own. Images are super sharp. I was really impressed. I am an avid amateur photographer and have been through close up lenses, bellows, you name it. Bottom line, you can't beat a good Macro (Micro) lens.
Simply put this lens has no competition! The clarity and color saturation are stunning. Images jump off the page. Many shots I have taken will get rave reviews from those that see them. The most common phrase I hear is "It looks like I can touch it" That is a great compliment that I can't claim any credit for, it's the lens!!
Nikon has gone one better by improving on the coating with the new "Nano Crystal" coating ("ED") which improves contrast and color saturation. Not having seen the Normal 60mm I am not in a position to compare this lens to that but I can say based on experience this is a lens that follows the Nikon philosophy of fine imagery. The Micro-Nikor 60mm shows Nikon is holding to that philosophy. This lens...flat out pleases the user.
Focus speed is very good but from time to time the lens will have trouble finding focus. Having focus inside the body of the lens is a nice convenience. No moving lens to get in the way if you are in tight on a subject. The Micro 60 has both "A" and "A/M" modes (auto with manual override) having almost the entire body of the lens occupied by the focus ring is nice if you don't want to wait for auto focus. As for the lack of an aperture ring I have mixed feelings but that's the way things seem to be going. With my D90 I have to lock the ring up anyway.
Like all Macro (aka Micro) lenses when shooting close to the subject a tripod is a good idea. It would be nice to see the Micro 60mm Nikkor with "VR" (vibration reduction) which would help on those days you may be out in the field and your tripod didn't make the trip.
As for "Cons" I really can't think of any aside from the occasional difficulty with AF but that's a rare occurrence.

This lens rocks! It is a joy to you use and I wish I had more shooting just so I can keep working with it.
I almost bought the other Nikon 60 2.8, but decided on this one since it was not much more money if adding a Nikon shade in the other's price. This one comes with a shade. The case is pretty wimpy, however.
The IF makes a huge difference when working with flash or almost 1:1. The focus is fluid and auto works better than I thought it would. It also goes from closest to infinity in less than half a turn.
Unlike many other AF lenses, this one is designed for manual focus. I completely forgot the difference between auto and manual focus when I was clicking away. The setting button is MA/M allowing a manual override of the autofocus as long as the shutter is halfway depressed.
No hesitations on this one. Buy it!

I am extremely pleased that I bought this lens; it is fast, the pictures are sharp, the bokeh is very pleasing. It is a great lens and I recommend it, I use it mostly for macro photography but I have noticed that it is as good for portraiture.
